Late last night some users started receiving alerts about potential man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks against connections between their device and Google controlled sites. Rest assured, this is not due to any malicious activity. Google has recently started using a different root certificate, which our detection system flagged as it was not part of the previous baseline of trusted certificates stored in the app.
Certificates are a critical part of internet security. They ensure that the site you’re connecting to is authentic and that your data is encrypted, protecting it from interception. Root certificates, specifically, are trusted by operating systems to verify the legitimacy of these connections.
Our app is designed to err on the side of caution to ensure your security. While this may appear concerning, it’s simply our system recognizing a change in Google’s usage of certificates.
We’ve updated Am I Secure? to version 1.3 to account for the root certificate and prevent unnecessary alerts. Your device will update the app automatically or you can also manually update it.
Thank you for your understanding as we continue to refine our detection system to keep you safe.
