Starting in World War I, but really taking off during the Cold War and still used to this day, high frequency radio stations are used to broadcast a person reading random numbers and/or letters. These transmissions are secret messages that are only decryptable by an intelligence officer, spy or soldier operating behind enemy lines that has the corresponding one time pad (OTP) to decrypt the random numbers being read in to a message.
Because anyone in the area receiving the signal from the broadcasting tower can listen, it is impossible for defending forces to identify or locate the recipient within this region. The use of one time pad encryption means that the message is secure forever provided the one time pad is not used again, kept secure before use and is destroyed after use. Our app of course doesn’t use high frequency radio signals to send messages but does use one time pads (OTPs) for the ultimate messaging security and allows for anonymous messaging where your identity is not revealed, analogous to a numbers station.
